OTHER PHOTOGRAPHIC FINDINGS

Gauchos and ranchers. Buenos Aires province. Circa 1890/1895.

Albumen print -27.5 x 22 cm / 10.82 x 8.66 in-, mounted on a secondary support and, on the verso of this, another 4 photographs, also albumen, two of 11 x 15 cm (4.33 x 5.9 in) and the other two, 7.8 x 5.9 cm (3.07 x 2.32 in).

The most important image in the complex shows three prosperous gauchos, perhaps ranchers or foremen. He recorded them in a very original way, posing seated on a large pile of logs and branches, probably in the Paraná delta region. All three wear elegant garments; poncho, hat, long English boots, one with a knife and the other with a firearm on his belt. In the background and to the right -under a lush willow tree- four girls are seen browsing the work of the photographer, which until now and despite the fact that he has used a good compositional technique, is unknown to us. It could be a member of the Argentine Amateur Photographic Society, an entity founded in 1889.

The album covers on the reverse also feature classic rural motifs; in the first one on the left we can see the important helmet of a two-story room and with a group of four men -supposedly one of them would be the owner- sitting at a table in front of it. Another of the photographs- below and to the right- shows a bull and a horse prepared for an exhibition, flanked by the owners and in the background the sheds and corrals of the ranch. In a third, we observe a group of gauchos in the task of skinning an animal, surrounded by several others prepared to collaborate. And the fourth reflects a corral with cattle and sheep, some of which are separated by various gauchos.

The important photographic set alludes to different activities carried out in the Argentine countryside towards the end of the 19th century. S.O.IV-BOL
